June 19 – 23, 2017 | 9a – 2p

From June 19-23 youth ages 7-16 are invited to learn the basics of sailing at Harbor Sailboats, located in Harbor Island West Marina. U.S.C.G. Captain and American Sailing Association (ASA) Licensed Instructors take students through the curriculum of ASA 101 Basic Keelboat. Over the course of five days, students learn the fundamentals of sailing and boating safety aboard a Capri 22’. Daily activities include on-the-water instruction and educational games. The week-long course concludes with a friendly race around the bay.

Harbor Sailboats’ (HS) 50 years of teaching experience is being extended to San Diego’s youth for the first time. HS boasts a roster of over 40 captains and instructors, all of which have extensive sailing history and knowledge. Many, like Keith Ericson, longtime friend and instructor for HS, are former Navy officers passionate about educating current and future sailors. Others, like Matt Sandoval, grew up on sailboats and have skippered around the world in such places as the British Virgin Islands and up and down the coast of California.

Sailing is an iconic sport that the entire family can enjoy. Harbor Sailboats is family owned and operated by Tom Hirsh and two of his sons, Kyle and Keenan. Each of them is a U.S.C.G. licensed captain, licensed yacht salesman and advanced sailing instructor. “I remember going to sailing camp as a kid,” says Keenan. “We spent our summers on the water learning to work together as a team and being educated about the environment. Now we sail together as a family every chance we get.” Wind and tide patterns, ocean conservation, and marine life are a few of the topics that will be covered in Harbor Sailboats’ youth sailing course.

The week long course curriculum covers ASA 101 Basic Keelboat. The ASA is an association of sailing schools, charter companies, professional sailing instructors, and sailors, with over 300 affiliated sailing schools located throughout the U.S., as well as in Europe, Japan, Central America, Taiwan, China, and other far eastern countries. To date ASA schools have certified nearly half a million sailors. Harbor Sailboats has been honored seven times with the “ASA School of the Year” award.
