Basic Keelboat 101

Learn to sail in just one weekend in San Diego! The Basic Keelboat graduate will have successfully demonstrated the ability to responsibly skipper and crew a 22’ keelboat in familiar waters, in light to moderate wind and sea conditions, without supervision.

Class Overview

In preparation for class, students are asked to complete reading and homework assignments from the Sailing Made Easy textbook. Basic Keelboat 101 is a 2-day, on-the-water class from 9am-5pm each day. Upon arriving, the ASA certified instructor will review homework and ensure all students are prepared for the day.  Four students and one instructor will spend 85% of all class time on a Capri 22 (22’ keelboat) on the water following a comprehensive introduction to the basic principles of sailing.

The previously mentioned homework is great preparation for the written exam which will occur the morning of day two. All practical exams will occur day two. Class breaks for lunch 1 hour each day. The marina on-site deli offers great sandwiches and burgers to satisfy your appetite before an afternoon of taking the helm, trimming sails and docking.

Upon successful completion of ASA 101, students will be certified to skipper a Capri 22 or up to 25′.

Class Covers

Nautical terminology, docking, rules of the road, sail trim and shape, headsail changes, reefing, crew teamwork and responsibilities, docking under sail, safety procedures, points of sail, tacking/jibing, knots, and man overboard.
