Coastal Cruising 103
The ASA 103 Coastal Cruising graduate will have successfully demonstrated the ability to responsibly skipper and crew an auxiliary powered cruising sailboat up to 37’ during daylight hours, within sight of land, in moderate wind and sea conditions.
Class Overview
In preparation for these sailing lessons, students are asked to complete reading and homework assignments from the Coastal Cruising Made Easy textbook. Coastal Cruising is a 2-day, on-the-water class from 9am to 5pm each day. Upon arriving, the instructor will review homework and make sure that all students are prepared for the day.
Three to five students and one instructor will spend 85% of all class time on a 28’ Catalina sailboat the first day and a 31’ Beneteau sailboat the second day.
This ASA sailing lesson introduces the intermediate sailor to a cruising yacht and offshore sailing procedures. The previously mentioned homework is great preparation for the written exam which will occur the morning of day two. Class breaks for lunch each day for 1 hour.
The marina on-site deli offers great sandwiches and burgers to satisfy your appetite before an afternoon of anchoring and practicing man overboard drills and docking. Upon successful completion of ASA 103, students will be certified to skipper up to 37′.
Class Covers
Mechanical and electrical systems, weather navigation, anchoring, reefing, heavy weather sailing, rules of the road, motoring skills, safety and emergency procedures, maneuvering under power, and VHF radio procedures.
